KENANSVILLE – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating an officer-involved fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on Cornwallis Road and Betholite Road in Duplin County on Thursday, Feb. 22.
According to the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was dispatched to a residence on Cornwallis Road for a pick-up of belongings at 4:46 p.m., and approximately three hours later the deputy was dispatched to the same residence for a domestic dispute with possible weapons involved.
“While enroute to the domestic call the deputy was involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident involving another vehicle on Cornwallis Road and Betholite Road,” wrote the Sheriff’s Office in the press release. “The driver of the vehicle involved was transported to ECU Health in Kenansville and passed away from his injuries.”
The Sheriff’s Office stated that the deputy, who was also transported to ECU Health in Kenansville, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff Stratton Stokes and the Sheriff’s Office expressed their condolences and prayers to the families of all involved in the post. “The sheriff asks for prayers from the community as well,” read the statement.
