N.C. Poultry Jubilee brings crowds to Rose Hill for fried chicken, live music & more

Duplin County’s poultry industry was celebrated in style when the 2023 North Carolina Poultry Jubilee hit Rose Hill last Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4. As in years past, the Poultry Jubilee featured amusement rides, games, live entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, and of course, plenty of fresh fried chicken cooked in the World’s Largest Frying Pan.

Rides were free of charge on Friday night, thanks to House of Raeford Farms. As always, the jubilee kicked off with the Wing Cook-Off Friday night, and a performance from the Band of Oz capped off the evening.

Perhaps the biggest draw for the Poultry Jubilee is the chance to eat fried chicken that’s cooked in the World’s Largest Frying Pan. This year, members of the Rose Hill Volunteer Fire Department fried up 385 chickens in 200 gallons of oil, event coordinator Amy Turner told the Duplin Journal.

“We have people from all over coming to the jubilee, wanting a bucket of chicken,” Turner said. “It’s been a huge draw for us.”

Another major selling point of the N.C. Poultry Jubilee has always been its pageant queens, who performed various talents on Saturday afternoon, and presented the cakes in the annual cake auction, which raises money for the Miss N.C. Poultry Jubilee scholarship fund. “We now have the largest pageant scholarship program in the state,” Turner said.

The 2023 N.C. Poultry Jubilee Queens are: Kayden Wells, Wee Miss; Ryanne Squibb, Little Miss; Brookelyn Griffin, Junior Miss; Carter Strickland and Charity Bradshaw, Ambassador Queens; Caroline Owens, Young Miss; Madelyn Evans, Teen Miss; and Hannah Wheeles, Miss N.C. Poultry Jubilee.

“We’ve got a great group of girls this year,” said Turner. “They’ve been doing a great job.”

Young Miss North Carolina Poultry Jubilee Caroline Owens performed the national anthem for the Poultry Jubilee’s opening ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 4.

Entertainment on Saturday also included showcases from local dance studios, Dancer’s Corner, To the Pointe Dance Academy, and 210 Productions. The Embers rounded out the jubilee with a live performance on Saturday night.
